Emo music, and culture has been around for at least a good 20 plus years. Emo is an offshoot of the old hard core punk movement. The subculture of emo is a mixture of punk and goth. It’s emotionally based, and somewhat dark. So the look and the makeup that goes with it speaks of a dark, hard look.
In order to achieve the emo makeup look a person should have a few things on hand. They should have some foundation, and the foundation should either match the skin, or be a shade lighter. It might be good to go with a makeup consistency that is a little thick. So a cream foundation or theater makeup might be good. To this end, you’re going to want to buy some sponges or wedges for good application. To this you want to buy eyeshadows that are dark and can be applied smoky, such as black, gray, silver, white, red, or the purples. The star of emo eye makeup is black eyeliner. Hands down, an emo look isn’t complete without lots of black eyeliner. The same goes for black mascara. The emo look is in your face, and stark. Your makeup needs to speak to this, or else you just look like a model trying to look hard, or a rock groupie.
Now, you also need concealer. Usually concealer is used to cover up dark spots around the eyes. But in this case, you want an even canvas around the eyes, and you want your eye makeup to sit on right, so use concealer around the eyes. After your base makeup has set, you want to apply your eye makeup. Start with using a smoky base of the colors mentioned. Lots of people go for the red, but you go use the grays, purples, or go for straight up black. Next, you want to apply thick amounts of black eye makeup on the lid of the eyes, and the bottom part of the eye under the lower lid. This isn’t the time to get shy with the application. You want to put that stuff ON!
Now, smear that black eyeliner on. You want and need thick lines for emo makeup. You want to coat the lower and upper lash line of the eyes very thick and heavy. A good way to cheat this, and to make sure that the liner doesn’t flake or smear off, is to coat the eyeliner with black eyeshadow. The powder from the eyeshadow will help it to set in place. Or, you could take an eyeliner brush, and dip it in water. Then you could dip the brush in the eyeshadow, and apply a moist coat of the black eyeshadow as eyeliner. This will create a very dramatic look. This is what you want.
When you are rocking emo makeup, leave the blush alone. You want plain cheeks. You do want to put on lipstick that is either a rich red color, or is very pale. Now you pretty much have an emo look. All you need is a wicked moppy, choppy haircut and color, and you’ve got the look that you want.
